** Tylin's guards and Altaran lancers **Tarasin palace guards "... wore gilded breastplates over green coats and baggy white trousers stuffed into dark green boots. Green cords secured thick twists of white cloth around glittering golden helmets, with the long ends hanging down their backs. Even their halberds and the scabbards of their daggers and short swords shone with gold." <ACoS: 16, 291, A Touch on the Cheek; also WH: 17, 358, Pink Ribbons>Officers, or at least the Sword-Lieutenant who escorts Mat into the palace, wear pointed helmets marked with gold and green cord <ACoS: 16, 292, A Touch on the Cheek>; the pointed helmet is again referred to later, as well a "thin gilded rod [to denote] his office." <WH: 17, 359, Pink Ribbons>. Though their costume is likely very similar, little more is revealed about Tylin's regular army, in their last desperate fight with the Seanchan: "... hundred mounted men swung long-pointed lances down. They wore baggy white breeches and green coats, and the gold cords on the officer's helmet glittered." <ACoS: 39, 621, Promises to Keep> Presumably, these troops are Tylin's House armsmen, in "... Mitsobar's green-and-white ..." <WH: 18, 376, An Offer> Altaran lancers, specifically Altaran light horse are also used in the Seanchan defensive against Rand in TPoD, their armor adorned with red slashes crisscrossing their breastplates, to indicate irregulars of doubtful reliability; these Altarans return to help guard Ebou Dar in Winter's Heart. <TPoD: 24, 457, A Time for Iron; 24, 475-6, A Time for Iron; WH: 18, 376, An Offer> Elsewhere, as Seanchan auxiliaries, their armour is marked with bars of yellow, green and blue painted across their breastplates <KoD: 7, 197, A Cold Medallion>. Jordan further notes that Altarans rarely serve as infantry <KoD: 7, 197, A Cold Medallion> See also: |
